Speaking in the Oval Office Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “won’t be hitting Qatar” again.

The remark comes after Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted strikes on Doha last week, to target Hamas offices and operatives – including one of the Palestinian militant group’s leaders.

The unprecedented IDF offensive has drawn condemnation across the world and triggered an emergency Arab-Islamic summit in the Qatari capital.

Trump quickly shifted topics, claiming he read an article reporting Hamas plans to use some 20 Israeli hostages as “human shields” if Israel’s onslaught against them continues.
