Vladimir Putin has criticised Europe’s “escalating militarisation”, during a speech at the annual Valdai summit in Sochi.

As western leaders gathered in Copenhagen to discuss defensive cooperation, the Russian president also denied that Moscow had any intention of launching an attack against Nato.

So in a week where Washington has hinted it could send new long-range missiles to Ukraine, are US-led diplomatic efforts to engage the Kremlin fading?
