Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday urged countries at the United Nations to increase pressure on Russian politicians, officials, judges and others "involved in child abductions."
"I urge you, please, in every sanctions package, increase the pressure on those Russian politicians, officials, judges, propagandists, and others involved in child abductions and their attempt to reprogram their minds," Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney were co-hosting an event at the UN General Assembly to raise the issue of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia during its war with Ukraine.
According to the Ukrainian government, the official count of missing children published in 2023 is at least 19,000. Carney has said Canada is committed to leading efforts to secure the return of the children, including through its co-leadership of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children.
