Justin Trudeau survived his toughest day as prime minister on Monday, following Chrystia Freeland’s scathing public resignation letter.

Freeland’s bombshell departure from cabinet set of a wave of calls for Trudeau to resign, including from NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and from some Liberal MPs.

On Monday afternoon, minutes after the government’s fall economic statement was released, Dominic LeBlanc was sworn in as the new finance minister.

The update shows the deficit has grown to nearly $62 billion – far beyond the $40-billion target Freeland set earlier in the year.
