In response to a question about a new hypersonic ballistic missile that Russia used for the first time last month to strike Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin mockingly challenged the US and its Western allies to a "high-tech duel of the XXI century."

"We are ready for such an experiment. Is the other side ready?" Putin said with a smirk.

During his annual news conference in Moscow on Thursday, he also boasted that his military operation in Ukraine is close to achieving its goals and that sending troops there in 2022 boosted Russia’s military and economic power.
