What will it take to rebuild Syria? | DW News

Turkey and Syria have been holding diplomatic talks in Damascus, the first since the overthrow of the Assad regime earlier this month.

Syria’s new leader Ahmed al-Sharaa and Turkey’s foreign minister Hakan Fidan held a joint press conference after their meeting. Fidan called for international sanctions on Syria to be lifted as soon as possible, so the country can start rebuilding its economy.

Since the fall of the Assad regime, many Syrians have been returning to their homeland from long exiles abroad. But after more than a decade of civil war, many are returning to find their homes, or entire city blocks, unrecognizable.
