“Ripped off for decades”: Trump addresses tariffs on Canada, Mexico during speech to US congress

From Global News.

During a speech before a joint session of the U.S. Congress on Tuesday night, U.S. President Donald Trump outlined his list of reasons for imposing import tariffs on Canada and Mexico, pointing to the alleged influx of fentanyl, as well as existing "trade imbalances" and what Trump described as "billions" in subsidies for both nations.

"We have been ripped off for decades, by nearly every coutry on Earth," Trump declared. "We will not allow that any longer."

"But we need Mexico and Canada to do much more than they’ve done. And they have to stop the fentanyl and drugs pouring into the USA," Trump told gathered lawmakers in Washington.

Earlier in the day, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Ottawa is hitting back against Trump‘s tariffs against Canada.

In a press conference held in Ottawa, he called Washington’s trade action “very dumb” and vowed to “hit back hard” as the country retaliates to try and get the tariffs lifted as soon as possible.
