After more than 350 years, the immediate future of the Hudson’s Bay Company is now a waiting game as a judge decides on liquidation of the once mighty department store chain.

Since ‘The Bay’ first admitted it was deep in debt and couldn’t pay its bills, the department store’s financial troubles came as no surprise to those paying attention for decades.

“There were lots of signals — elevators weren’t working, you couldn’t get staff — these problems were simmering for years, says Marina Strauss, a former retail columnist at the Globe and Mail.
