Just as I was about to make this video eFIXX dropped one on the same subject. Now I’ve made mine I’m going to check out theirs and see how they compare.
This kit is an extremely good value wire ferrule kit from Lidl. For less than the cost of even a basic bootlace ferrule crimping tool, you are getting a wide range ratcheting tool, plus a HUGE number of ferrules in all the common sizes from 0.5mm to 10mm.
The purpose of a bootlace ferrule is to bind the loose strands of a cable together into a solid core before being clamped in a terminal. It also provides support to the cable at the point of termination and reduces the risks of strands being splayed and damaged during clamping – especially with bare clamping screws.
It is NOT for use with solid core cables, but can be used with 7-strand and upwards flexible cables.
The kit contains:-
A four jaw crimping tool with a ratchet system to ensure a proper crimping process.
300 x white 0.5mm ferrules
200 x grey 0.75mm ferrules
200 x red 1mm ferrules
450 x black 1.5mm ferrules
450 x blue 2.5mm ferrules
100 x grey 4mm ferrules
60 x yellow 6mm ferrules
40 x red 10mm ferrules
All ferrules have 10mm long tubes except for the 6+10mm ferrules that have 12mm long tubes.
The ferrule tubes appear to be made from tinned brass (a zinc and copper alloy that is cheaper than pure copper.) Many terminals are made of brass, so this is an acceptable contact material.
For putting more than one wire into a terminal you can also get dual wire ferrules with a common metal tube and a plastic shroud that is shaped for the two wires. I recommend only buying ferrules from known sources. They are not expensive to buy.
