A major power outage in Spain and Portugal has knocked out subway networks and traffic signals, causing traffic chaos across the Iberian peninsula.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said a problem with the European grid that he described as an “oscillation” was behind the outage, but that the cause was still undetermined.

He asked that the population not speculate on a cause and said that there was no security risk as a result of the outage.

Spanish power distributor Red Eléctrica said restoring electricity to large swaths of the country could take between six to 10 hours.
