Cardinal Robert Prevost elected as first American-born Pope Leo XIV | DW News

From DW News.

The world’s 1.4 billion Catholics have a new pope. His name is Cardinal Robert Prevost and he’s the first American-born pope.

The 69-year old has taken the papal name "Leo the fourteenth". Prevost is also a citizen of Peru, where he lived for many years as a missionary and archbishop. The announcement came about an hour after white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. Pope Leo was elected to replace the late Pope Francis by a conclave of 133 cardinals who made their choice over two days.
