From Global News.
1979 was the summer of the Vancouver Whitecaps. They were en route to being the number one team in North American soccer, filling up Empire Stadium and causing long lines for playoff tickets.
The Whitecaps defeated the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League semi-finals, before beating the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the Soccer Bowl. The day after their win, the team flew home to a sea of people and a city-wide celebration and parade.
From the brawl to Willie Johnston’s beer-drinking moments, Global’s Squire Barnes looks back at the Cinderella season with Vancouver Whitecaps winger Carl Valentine and defender Bob Lenarduzzi, examining how the win propelled the team and city from being called the "Village of Vancouver" to international acclaim.
