Thousands participate in anti-tourism protest in Barcelona with water pistols, smoke bombs

From Global News.

Thousands gathered in Barcelona’s city center on Sunday to protest the overwhelming impact of mass tourism on local communities.

The demonstration featured symbolic actions such as firing water pistols, setting off coloured smoke, taping off hotel entrances, and setting off smoke bombs near luxury shops like Louis Vuitton.

“We need responsible tourism,” said a protester Vania Arana. “Not mass tourism, but tourism that respects health, labour, dignity, and those of us who work in this sector.”

Protester Eva Vilaseca said, “Tourism isn’t bringing prosperity, it’s bringing poverty … We don’t want to become another Ibiza.”
