Putin declares liberal globalization model “obsolete” at BRICS Summit

From Global News.

Representatives of BRICS member countries gathered on Sunday for the first day of the annual summit, held this year in Rio de Janeiro.

Originally formed in 2009, BRICS now includes 11 nations, with Indonesia joining established members like Brazil, India, and South Africa this year. The group advocates for reform of Western-led institutions and promotes multilateralism.

Notable absences from this year’s summit include China’s President Xi Jinping, who sent his premier in his place, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is participating virtually due to an ICC arrest warrant.

Putin told a summit of the BRICS countries that the liberal model of globalization was becoming obsolete. "The centre of business activity is shifting towards the developing markets," he said.
