On Monday, the European Union reacted to Trump’s 30 per cent tariff threat, calling it "absolutely unacceptable" in the case of Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said.

EU’s Trade Chief Maros Sefcovic stated the EU would need to go for countermeasures if the trade negotiations with the U.S. fail.

He added he believes there is "still a potential to continue the negotiations" and that any deal has to be accepted by EU members and the European Parliament.

Trump stepped up his trade war on Saturday, saying he would impose a 30% tariff on most imports from the EU and Mexico from next month, adding to similar warnings for other countries including Asian economic powerhouses Japan and South Korea.

"We’re dealing with countries…that have been shut to us, but we’ve been open to them," Trump told reporters on Sunday. "Not a fair deal."
