At least two people have died in floods brought on by torrential downpour in New Jersey Monday.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy confirmed the tragedy on Tuesday, detailing that the fatalities were a result of a car in Plainfield being swept away by the floods.

On top of several power outages, thousands of cars and homes have been submerged as a result of the severe storm.

Murphy has declared a state of emergency, promising further updates on the damage within 48 hours.
