A massive fire in a shopping mall in al-Kut city in eastern Iraq has left at least 69 people dead and 11 others missing, authorities said on Thursday.

"The fire started around 8 p.m. and continued burning until 4 a.m. The flames were raging," said eyewitness Ali Al Zargani.

He added, "More than 100 people are either missing or injured, and the number of the injured is more."

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but the province’s governor said Thursday that initial results from an investigation would be announced within 48 hours.
