Global National: July 21, 2025 | Montreal girl spoke with mom hours before murder, NY police say

From Global News.

A Montreal businessman is facing charges of second-degree murder and concealment of a body after his nine-year-old daughter was found dead in the U.S. The father is accused of killing the girl on vacation in New York. He initially told police she was abducted, but investigators say that was a lie. Touria Izri reports on what we know so far.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree says he was only doing his job and downplayed his involvement in a national security case about letters he wrote supporting a member of a terrorist group. A Global News investigation uncovered Anandasangaree had asked Canadian officials to back the immigration bid of a man who was already deemed by Canada as a member of the Tamil Tigers. Jeff Semple has more.

Canada’s premiers are gathering in Huntsville, Ont., on Monday ahead of a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Once again, the economy and U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs are at the top of the agenda, with more levies against Canadian goods expected in the coming weeks. As Mackenzie Gray reports, there are still differing opinions on how best to tackle the problem.

Canada and 24 other countries, excluding the U.S., issued a joint statement Monday demanding Israel end the war in Gaza. The letter criticizes the Israeli and U.S.-backed aid operation in Gaza, Israel’s plan to create a so-called humanitarian city, and Israeli settlements in the West Bank. As Redmond Shannon reports, the letter comes as Israel starts a new ground offensive.
