From Global News.
The ongoing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has escalated, leaving at least 12 people dead and dozens others injured at various border points.
Following weeks of tension between the neighbouring countries – triggered by a military skirmish that left a Cambodian soldier dead in May – both sides accused each other of being the first to open fire near the disputed Ta Moan Thom temple on Thursday.
This came after Thailand accused Cambodia of planting landmines which injured several Thai soldiers in a disputed border region on Wednesday. However, Cambodia denied the claim, suggesting the explosive device was left behind from decades of war.
In response, Thailand’s military deployed F-16 fighter jets, which dropped two bombs on military targets Thursday morning. And now, Thailand is accusing Cambodia of launching rockets into civilian areas along the contentious 817-km-long land border.
“We will not surrender our nation’s sovereignty,” Thailand’s acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, said Thursday after the closure of all border points. “We are fully defending ourselves,” he added.
