President Donald Trump blamed failed ceasefire talks in Gaza on Hamas and said the militant group was not serious about making "a deal."
"Hamas didn’t really want to make a deal. I think they want to die," Trump told reporters on Friday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced earlier that the U.S. and Israel were withdrawing their negotiation teams. A sticking point of negotiations has been the return of remaining Israeli hostages held in Gaza who were taken by Hamas on the Oct. 7 attack.
Hamas has said it will not release the remaining hostages without a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and an end to the war–terms Israel has rejected.
"We’re down to the final hostages and they know what happens after you get the final hostages and basically because of that, they really didn’t want to make a deal," Trump said.
Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff said the U.S. would seek "alternative options" for the return of hostages.
