Israel has allowed dozens of UN aid trucks to once again enter the Gaza Strip after weeks of its restrictions on aid deliveries to starving Palestinians. Israeli’s slight easing of its blockade on Gaza comes as international pressure to lift all aid restrictions has been mounting. Israel imposed a humanitarian blockade on the Gaza Strip on March 2nd, preventing the UN and other international aid groups from delivering aid to the enclave. After approximately 11 weeks of the blockade in May, Israel instituted its own so-called aid mechanism in Gaza together with the US private contractor the ‘Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.’ The joint Israeli-GHF run sites have been widely criticized by aid groups as “weaponizing aid” and creating unsafe conditions for aid seekers to gather food. Gaza health officials have reported over 1,000 Palestinians shot dead by Israeli or GHF fire while seeking aid – mostly at or near GHF sites.
Israel’s recent decision to allow limited aid into Gaza comes as leading Israeli human rights groups, including B’Tselem, accuse Israel’s government of committing genocide in the territory. Yuli Novak, Executive Director of B’Tselem, stated that her organization’s report on Israel’s offensive "presents facts, data, and testimonies, about how Israel is acting in a deliberate, coordinated, and sytematic way to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza." US President Donald Trump has said he disagrees with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claim that there is "no starvation" in Gaza.
