“Still time to rebalance”, expert says after Trump slaps 35% tariff on Canada

From Global News.

With no trade deal secured between Canada and the U.S., President Donald Trump implemented 35 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports Aug. 1.

Though tariffs for most other countries are set to kick in Aug. 7, Drew Fagan of the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy suggests the lack of an extension for Canada could have something to do with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s intent to recognize Palestinian statehood, but believes its primarily related to the U.S. fentanyl crisis at the border.

On the odds Canada could see a trade deal come to fruition, Fagen doesn’t believe its out of reach, but reiterates that Trump’s tariffs don’t apply to goods within the CUSMA agreement – suggesting that the impact on Canadians, at least so far, has been minimal.

“There’s still time to rebalance and focus on negotiations,” Fagen told Global’s Miranda Anthistle, nothing that, despite public concern, Carney is “under less pressure behind the scenes than it might appear” due to the current stability of Canada’s economy.
