Protesters with disabilities and their families confronted riot police outside Argentina’s Congress on Tuesday, demanding the reversal of President Javier Milei’s veto of disability protection legislation.
The emotional protests featured demonstrators on crutches and in wheelchairs pushing against police barricades.
"The veto is a step back; it leaves us devastated. Let’s hope this situation is reversed for the sake of everyone," said Sandra Daniela, a demonstrator and mother of a child with a disability.
Milei on Monday vetoed a law expanding protections for people with disabilities, saying the legislation would have undermined his pledge to eliminate the country’s chronic fiscal deficit. Milei’s administration said Congress passed the spending bills "without determining the source of the funds."
