At a Moscow concert, the sounds of Metallica send heavy metal fans into frenzy. But the performers are not the legendary US rockers, who last played in Russia in 2019, but a prominent Russian cover band. With Western groups largely absent since Russia’s 2022 military campaign in Ukraine, cover bands are on the rise, filling the void for fans. "I closed my eyes tight and imagined that I was at a Metallica concert. What a feeling!" says Denis, a 41-year-old fan.
