U.S. President Donald Trump says Russian President Vladimir Putin – who has been frequently dismissive of potential face-to-face negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy – doesn’t need to meet with Zelenskyy to secure a meeting with his administration.

“He doesn’t,” Trump told reporters posing the question on Thursday.

Trump’s response comes not only hours after Kremlin officials claimed Putin and Trump will meet within the week, but one day after Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, held a three-hour meeting with the Russian leader in Moscow.

Russia is facing pressure from the U.S. to end its 44-month war with Ukraine after Trump threatened new sanctions against the nation and other countries that buy its exports.
