Trump orders National Guard to D.C., takeover of city’s police

From NPR.

In a news conference Monday morning, President Trump announced his administration would be deploying the National Guard to Washington, D.C., and asserting federal control over the city’s Metropolitan police department. He said the moves were necessary to quell what he has described as an epidemic of crime and homelessness in the nation’s capital.

"This is liberation day in DC and we’re going to take our capital back, we’re taking it back," Trump said.

The move comes over the objections of local leaders, and despite the fact that violent crime in the city plunged to a 30-year low last year, according to data compiled by the U.S. Department of Justice.
