It’s been a difficult first 100 days in office for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Since he became head of the Christian Democrats (CDU) in 2023, he’s put his party back on a more conservative path – one he hoped to follow as German leader. But a coalition with long-standing political rivals, the Social Democrats (SPD), forced him to make compromises. Merz had said he hoped the first results of his chancellorship would be visible by late summer. So far, polls show a majority of Germans are unconvinced. We take a look at some of the challenges he’s facing right now.
