Firefighters battle blaze in northern Portugal as wildfires fanned by a heatwave and strong winds wreaked destruction across southern Europe, burning homes and forcing thousands of residents and tourists to flee. A blaze in Trancoso, Portugal, that has been burning since August 9 worsened overnight as lightning reignited an area previously thought to be safe, the civil protection service said.
