From Global News.
Senior executives representing Air Canada are set to hold a press conference on Thursday after the union representing its flight attendants officially handed in its 72-hour strike notice overnight. Meanwhile, the airline has issued its own plan to lock out employees early Saturday morning.
Now, Canada’s jobs minister has asked the union representing Air Canada‘s flight attendants to respond to the airline’s request for her to send the two parties to binding arbitration.
Air Canada began cancelling flights Thursday, with many more expected Friday, because “sudden or unmanaged work stoppages produce a significantly worse disruption to travel than a planned suspension of flying.”
According to the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), suspension or cancellation of flights due to labour disruptions, such as strikes or lockouts, is “deemed outside the airline’s control.”
