Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued an unusual statement Saturday praising U.S. President Donald Trump for trying to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.

Carney’s public endorsement of Trump’s leadership on the world stage came as the president and his Alaskan summit were widely derided by foreign policy and security experts.

In a brief statement, Carney said he “welcomed the openness of the United States to provide security guarantees” to Ukraine.

No deal was struck Friday between Trump and Putin as the two leaders met in Alaska, but we are learning more about what occurred during that meeting – and what could happen next.
