From Global News.
After a marginal victory in the race for the Battle River-Crowfoot riding in rural Alberta earlier this week, Pierre Poilievre, Canada’s Conservative party leader, is set to hold a press conference on Wednesday — his first since securing a place again in the House of Commons this fall.
Before achieving this critical victory, Poilievre held the Ottawa-area riding of Carleton for 20 years. However, he was ousted from it in April’s federal election by Liberal MP Bruce Fanjoy — forcing Poilievre to seek a new riding and raising questions about his future leading the Conservatives following their defeat to the governing Liberals.
As Official Opposition leader, Poilievre now will get the chance to face off with Prime Minister Mark Carney, after months of being forced to hold press conferences and events outside the chamber to respond to the Liberals and outline Conservative priorities. In Poilievre’s last season in Parliament, he faced off against former prime minister Justin Trudeau for several years.
“We will put Canada first and we will do so in a way that will make our country self-reliant and make our people capable of earning paycheques that buy affordable food and homes in safe neighbourhoods,” Poilievre said after his victory Monday night, adding he is willing to work with any party to make those priorities a reality.
