Demand for single-gender spaces has grown in China, as women flex increasing economic power to secure peace of mind and physical safety.
The country’s women-only co-living spaces are far from social pressures and male judgment. Some women seek them out to share mutual support, or to look for companionship or refuge from harassment.
Others are keen to escape intrusive questioning or pressure from relatives, including to get married and have children.
