“A war landscape”: Thousands feared dead after Cyclone Chido batters Mayotte

From Global News.

France is rushing aid to the French territory of Mayotte after it was battered by its worst cyclone in nearly a century.

Cyclone Chido leveled entire neighbourhoods as it rampaged through the territory on Saturday, with authorities fearing that hundreds, possibly even thousands, of people may have died.

The official death toll as of Monday afternoon was 20, but France’s health minister warned any estimates were likely major undercounts “compared to the scale of the disaster.”

“It really is a war landscape,” said an architect living in Mayotte. “Around me, I don’t recognize anything anymore. There’s not even a tree left, the hills, there’s not a blade of grass. It’s impressive.

French President Emmanuel Macron was set to host a meeting to address the emergency on Monday.
