Air Canada strike: Ottawa orders binding arbitration to resolve labour dispute

From Global News.

Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu announced on Saturday that she has directed both parties in the labour dispute between Air Canada and the union representing flight attendants to resume their operations to maintain industrial peace and protect Canada’s economy.

She urged the Canada Industrial Relations Board to facilitate a resolution by implementing final and binding arbitration, along with extending the current collective agreement until a new one is established.

"Now is not the time to take risks with our economy. A work stoppage would cause thousands of Canadians to be stranded abroad and across this country, and this is simply unacceptable," Hajdu said.

The strike officially began just before 1 a.m. ET on Saturday. Air Canada locked out its agents about 30 minutes later due to the strike action.
