Alberta man mourns loss of beloved pet after being ambushed, injured by 4 dogs

Steve Smith is recovering from devastating injuries after being attacked by four large dogs just blocks from his home in Airdrie, Alberta.

Smith, who has partial paralysis from a previous accident, was walking his cherished dog, York, when the unthinkable happened. “We came around the corner, and he came around the other corner and we met in the middle.” Smith tells Global News.

As Smith fought to protect York, he suffered severe wounds, including deep bites and bruises. “He tried to protect me from his dogs, but all hell was breaking loose," he said.

York did not survive the attack, suffering over 100 bites and broken bones. Now, Smith is seeking justice and accountability.

Local authorities have seized the four dogs, but what happens next remains uncertain. Smith, a lifelong dog lover, says he wants compensation and answers.Global’s Elissa Carpenter reports.
