Most North American shorebird populations are declining. But there are some success stories: Today, there are 45% more American oystercatchers than there were 17 years ago.
That’s according to data from a coalition of more than 40 groups along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts that have spent nearly two decades collaborating on oystercatcher recovery. From Maine to Florida, the recovery work includes improving coastal habitat, restoring oyster reefs and recruiting volunteers who help stop people from walking on shorebird nests on or near the beach.
Conservationists say for oystercatchers to keep coming back, it will be critical to continue investing in these long-term, coordinated partnerships.
