Canada is among several countries with territorial claims to the Arctic, a region with shifting geopolitics due to climate change.

Russia and China have long desired for control of Canada’s arctic. In addition, U.S. President Donald Trump has increasingly floated the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state.

Global’s Eric Sorensen explains why Steve Bannon, a former top adviser to Trump, says the Arctic is Canada’s "softest underbelly" and could be central to helping Trump establish "hemispheric control."
