Polls open in the German capital for voters to elect a new Chancellor. Friedrich Merz’s centre-right CDU/CSU bloc are strong favourites, while current Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s SPD trails in the polls. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) are targetting a record score, boosted by support from key Trump allies and anger over a spate of deadly knife attacks and car rammings blamed on migrants.
