U.S. President Donald Trump’s nominee for ambassador to Canada, Pete Hoekstra on Thursday reaffirmed the importance of the U.S.-Canada relationship and Canadian sovereignty, despite escalating attacks from the White House.

In response to Senator Chris Coons’ question regarding Canada’s status as a sovereign nation, Hoekstra stated, "Canada is a sovereign state."

Hoekstra also agreed with Democrat Sen. Chris Coons, who suggested the arrival of a new prime minister offered an opportunity for a “reset” of the relationship.
