From Global News.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will hold a press conference as the NATO summit wraps up in the Netherlands on Tuesday. During the summit, NATO alliance members are prepared to decide whether to more than double the defence spending target.
Carney has said Canada needs to commit $150 billion per year on defence to meet NATO’s new spending target.
U.S. Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte have both said they expect alliance members to commit to a new target to spend the equivalent of five per cent of GDP on defence, up from the current two per cent target set in 2014.
Canada’s defence spending hasn’t reached five per cent of GDP since the 1950s.
