At the G7 summit in La Malbaie, Que., on Friday, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly pushed back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to Canadian sovereignty, saying they were "not up to debate, period.”

She noted that some of her European counterparts initially dismissed his 51st state remarks as humorous but said, “Canadians are anxious.

They’re proud people. And you are here in a sovereign country.” Joly stressed the seriousness of the issue in her discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
