From Global News.
What was meant to be a quick day trip to Montana turned into a nightmare for Calgary resident Krisztian Riez.
After renting a minivan through the app Turo, he was stopped at the Canadian border — where officers said they found traces of deadly fentanyl on the steering wheel and back seat.
“They said, step outside. A list of questions, I listened, I followed and then they’re like Fentanyl hit.” Riez told Global News.
Riez says the hours-long search and questioning left him shaken and determined to push for change in rental vehicle safety standards.
Turo disputes his allegations, citing confidence in their cleaning protocols.
Now, Riez is taking legal action and speaking to lawmakers, warning that even small amounts of fentanyl can be lethal — and that renting a car should never be this dangerous.
“I don’t think we understand the risk when we go into a third-party vehicle.”
Skylar Peters reports.
