From Global News.
Pope Francis was known as the "Pope of the Periphery" for his affection for the common person. So it’s only fitting the late pontiff made one last journey through the streets of Rome, sidewalks and curbs lined with pedestrians and well-wishers.
Pope Francis was taken to be buried in a niche within the Basilica of St. Mary Major, near his favorite Madonna icon. This final resting place, as well as the procession from St. Peter’s Square to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, was chosen personally by the late pontiff.
The death of Francis, who was 88, capped a 12-year pontificate characterized by his concern for the poor and his message of inclusion, but he was also criticized by some conservatives who felt alienated by his progressive outlook.
