As the Canada-U.S. relationship hits turbulence, former U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Cohen reminds us of other historic rocky cross-border relationships and how they’ve been weathered.

As U.S. President Donald Trump’s long-threatened tariffs finally come into effect, Cohen says there has been a large bipartisan reaction across the U.S., consisting mostly of “nervousness.” Canadians are feeling the exact same dread, and Cohen says Canada is not to blame for Trump’s actions.

Cohen also notes that Trump’s tariffs are not only against Canada, but dozens of other countries haven been hit, raising the chances of a global recession to “up to 60 per cent.”
