China announced retaliatory tariffs on some Canadian farm and food imports over the weekend after Canada imposed duties in October on Chinese-made electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products.

During a press conference on Monday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning congratulated Mark Carney after he won the race to lead Canada’s ruling party and become the next prime minister.

“We look forward to Canada objectively and rationally adhering to an objective and rational perception towards China,” she said.
