Close look at an LED “neon” colour sample panel

From bigclivedotcom.

A close look at the construction of a demonstrator panel for displaying the colours of LED neon strip. It’s very similar to the ones used by the real neon industry to show the phosphor, glass and gas colours. But the ease of driving LEDs (just a 12V supply) makes this one a lot simpler.

The component suppliers for this style of sign supply the router bits, LED tape, cutting tools, bundles of pre-tinned wire links and the front cover strip. I initially thought the wire links were all going to be done on the back of the sign, but it’s clear plastic, so it makes sense to just have them on the front to eliminate the need for drilling lots of holes and simplify the soldering.

I’ve done some experiments in the past using this material pressed into 3D printed shapes, and it worked very well.

This one came from AliExpress and was more expensive than a similarly sized sign, purely because this is aimed at people who arrange the manufacture of custom signs. But I like this panel just for its decorative appearance.

My condolences to the Americans for the current tariff turmoil that may double the price of things like this.
