From DW News.
It was a surprise announcement, almost mentioned in passing at a press conference in the Oval Office. Sitting next to Israel’s Prime Minister, Donald Trump said the US was holding direct talks with Iran. The aim: a deal over Tehran’s nuclear program. Trump unilaterally pulled out of the last Iran nuclear deal in 2018, during his first presidency. The White House has confirmed that negotiations are set to continue on Saturday in Oman and will be led by the man seemingly tasked with solving all the world’s crises – special envoy Steve Witkoff.
The great danger that Donald Trump is alluding to there is potential military action. He’s threatened to bomb Iran if it fails to agree to a nuclear deal. Iranian officials today were sceptical about Saturday’s talks, but they have agreed to take part. Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araqchi said they would be indirect, likely with Omani mediators shuttling between the parties. He said Tehran wants to see concrete gestures from the US before any officials talk face-to-face.
