“Coup against democracy”: Mass protests across Turkey after mayor of Istanbul detained by police

From Global News.

Turkish authorities detained Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, the biggest political rival of President Tayyip Erdogan, on Wednesday.

Imamoglu faces charges including alleged corruption and allegations of aiding a terrorist group.

Protesters took over the streets of Turkey, calling the detention of the Istanbul mayor a "coup against democracy."

Turkey’s justice minister said that linking President Tayyip Erdogan to ongoing legal moves, including the detention of Imamoglu amounted to overstepping and insolence.

Meanwhile, a protester said, "We knew very well that we would wake up in the morning with such a decision… We are all here until the decision is changed and justice is served. We are ready to provide support."
