Drone footage revealed the extent of damage and destruction in residential areas in Kaweni on Wednesday, four days after Cyclone Chido ripped through the French overseas territory of Mayotte.
"We don’t need the President (Emmanuel Macron) to come and tell us that he loves us. We do not need a declaration of love. We need gestures of love. We need to see that France will not cast Mayotte aside," said Nizar Assani, a real estate manager from Mayotte.
Relief operations ramped up as food aid distribution efforts began on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the death toll remains unclear, with at least 22 fatalities confirmed in hospitals so far. Local officials and health workers fear the actual number could be much higher.
