Donald Trump said "we didn’t get there" on a Ukraine deal with Vladimir Putin, after a three-hour meeting between the leaders in Alaska.
However, the US president insisted progress was still made, while Putin said he is "sincerely interested" in ending the war, without giving details.
Neither leaders took questions from the media at the end of the summit.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has agreed to fly to Washington on Monday after a "long and substantive" phone call with Trump on Air Force One.
